Conan the Barbarian (2011) in 3-D - Review
There is a reason that Re-makes dont work...Especially if they are of Iconic films. Even re-booting the franchise with a new story line is a iffy-proposition and often leads us to think that the film would have maybe succeeded if it had been given a new title and we went in without expectations...all these things have been proved once again by watching Conan the Barbaian in 3-D at Robot Bala Abirami Theatre in Purasaiwalkam today matinee show. There were a total of 20 people in the theater and as half of the crowd consisted of canoodling couples who soon sneaked off to distant and dark corners, I guess the actual audience for the movie was pretty much of a handfull- and this was just the second day of its release.
Halfway through the movie and all the way back home from the film I was trying hard to remember where I had seen this film before.....naah...this wasnt a rip-off of the Original Arnie Schwarznegger Conan....this looked like a scene-by-scene rip-off of some other movie I had seen recently.....and then it hit me...The Prince of Persia- Sands of time...
The story is basically the same...a dispossessed warrior with a girl in tow fighting evil magicians and cruel tyrants.....blah..blah..blah...its all swords and sandals stuff...the last fight atop a crumbling fort is actually a frame-by- frame copy of the Prince of Persia climax fight- with the collapsing masonry and the hero and villian slugging it out and the heroine hanging from the hero's hand right over a awesome chasm and begging him to let go of her and fight the villian...you get the drift..
Some of the fights seem illogical and the screenplay looks like having been written on the run- lack of story does that to you- you just want to fill it up with fights and special effects. The evil monster sand-men fight is pretty interesting but they die too soon and too easily- unlike the scene from "the Mummy" which is clearly the inspiration for this scene.
Jason Momoa tries hard...but the shoes are too big for him to fill...firstly, he doesnt look like a barbarian- he looks like a (gay)beach bum with a preening attitude. Now Arnold- he really looked like a barbarian- even without meaning to- I mean he looked the part of the half-animal/half-man crazy dude in real life too. And with Arnold it was easier to believe that all those 100 soldiers waiting to be slaughtered had met their come-uppance...there was no way they could survive those biceps...with Jason it's a bit iffy- if he would fight them or maybe pout at them..
Ron Perlman as Conans father does seem miscast too....he looks as if he came straight from the sets of Hell-boy and doesnt look like having fathered anyone, least of all a human....The heroine is pretty interesting looking and can, surprise, act, but even she is swallowed up by the vilian's daughter..now this was one frighteningly sick missie with a big black unibrow.....signifying her strength in black magic?
Finally a word about the theatre..please dont watch any film, especially a 3-D film at Bala Abirami (robot or not)...the size of the screen for the size of the hall is like watching TV at home....
All-in all - I would sum-up Conan 2011 as worth waiting for to watch on TV....

Cougar City.......
It took yet another pass at me- this time by a totally unexpected person- which has left me nonplussed and introspective on what actually is going on with my life. I have heard of this kind of shock before- of how rape victims frequently blame themselves for provoking the incident somehow and wonder whether they were inappropriately dressed. For your information, I was quite appropriately dressed in full professional get-up, long-sleeved shirt et al, for this was a work related incident.
It all started with a call from a friend of many years , lets say dr.A, who called me up to tell me that he had recommended me to a Doctor couple who were running a very flourishing practice in the city and who wanted a consultant in my speciality. dr.A had been a consultant there for some time previously before setting up on his own account and had vouched for me as being able to fit their requirements. Being a free-lance consultant (why?- is another story) I depend on such word of mouth endorsements to pick up new consultations. And so I decided to accept my friends recommendation and turn up there for meeting the doctor the very next day.
One clinching factor for this promptness was the information that A gave me to the effect that Dr.V- the Senior specialist had a good-looking daughter of marriageable age doing Postgraduation in our speciality and being a only daughter will most probably end up with the Hospital, practice and all the rest. My friend A had tried to pick her up when he was working there and had been snubbed- he hoped I had better luck. Well, I thought, it all depended on how she looked- if she wasnt upto scratch- I'll just stick to consultation, was what I thought when i went there the next day for the interview.
After the mandatory hour of waiting, in an empty waiting room- with no patients- which is par for the course for any junior doctor when you have to meet seniors (the situation is even worse in corporate hospitals where they give you a morning appointment for interview and make you wait till the evening, informing you throughout the day that your interview will start in the next ten minutes sir, so please dont go away anywhere), I was invited inside the consultation room by Dr.V and grilled on all aspects of my training and previous experiences. He then called over his wife on the intercom and after a few whispered comments directed me to go over to the next cubicle where his wife- who he said was the administrator of their hospital would go over the rest of the minor details, presumably my payment details.
I made my way over next door, knocked and went in. The room was bigger, better furnished (coffee table and matching sofa's and mood lighting) and incredibly posh-looking than Dr.V's small and cramped consultation room- maybe the perks of being the administrator of finances, while dr.v was merely the earner of them. And waiting there was Dr.V's better-half who was really his better-half, making you wonder how such a man had married such a voluptous woman. Ok, now I had high hopes for the daughter- if she had got her moms looks, was what I thought. She sat there at her desk and prattled on about Dr.A and the happy time he had working there and how much he had learned in their hospital to give him enough confidence to start his own practice and then she suddenly slapped her head over her forgetfulness to ask me to sit down and invited me to take my seat at one of the sofa's surrounding the coffee table, rather than at the desk opposite her(surprisingly).
To my surprise and mild shock, Mrs.V, came over and sat down right beside me- cosy as two long lost friends meeting up. As she spoke the necessary preliminary pleasantries, her sleeveless blouse exhibited an in-apppropriate amount of cleavage- I took this for a test to check where I looked- so studiously avoided looking there- as i was sure that I was interviewing not just for the post of consultant but also (if possible)future son-in-law. As we were discussing the frequency of my visits and fees (ridiculously low, if you ask me- but I was there with bigger fish to fry, so I did'nt mind), she casually draped a arm over the back of my sofa right over my shoulder blades and leaned closer towards me.
As we were sitting side-by-side facing each other this put me in an extremely uncomfortable position of not avoiding whatever was on show (which included- yeech- an unshaved armpit with revolting tufts of underarm hair- when will women learn that wearing sleeveless involves having perfect underarm hygiene maintenance?). As I was twisting and turning with discomfort, trying not to even accidentally touch her, she made a honest-to god-pass at me- asking me to schedule my visits on thursday afternoons as Dr.V usually took the day off and left it to just the consultants and her- with a wink and a saucy smile which spoke volumes.
I stared, blinked and stared again (mouth hanging open?)- maybe I had imagined it? Maybe my contact lenses were playing tricks with the low-lighting of the room. But my instincts were screaming like hell- get the hell out of there before this goes an further- I was so afraid to open my mouth and say something/anything which might come back to haunt me in the future. Scared, stammering and apologizing profusely, I pleaded a prior appointment (forgotten till now) and promising to call Dr.V that evening to confirm my taking up the position- I escaped from that place.
It was only when I reached home -that the shit hit me- what the fuck, I asked myself- I looked on her as a possible mother-in-law and she looks on me as a possible sex partner? Was I getting that old? That henceforth I would be hit on by aunties and not girls? It was a shocking and sobering though that maybe I had somehow sent mixed signals to her which had provoked her pass- was I so sexually starved that unknown to me I was putting it out there? I had considered myself a reluctant ascetic (being single, what other choice had I?)- but maybe, just maybe, my (enforced) abstinence was sending out all the wrong signals. A lot of confusing thoughts and feelings were overwhelming me. I have been hit on before- it was inevitable in the profession- but that had always been within my own age range and I had known how to turn them down gently without hurting any feelings or causing any complications. But this was the first time a woman old enough to be my mum had hit on me- and I was really shaken by the experience.
I called up Dr.V and respectfully informed that I declined his offer due to the long distance commute involved and my previous and other professional commitments. He was sarcastic and downright insulting about the younger generation and their lazy attitudes and inability to work hard even if the remuneration was rewarding, but I took all the blows on the chin and hoped that things end with this and take no further turns or twists.
Footnote: I called up A and complained about my experience and he merely laughed and said it was one of the perks of the job- to screw the boss's wife and why woud'nt I enjoy it too? For the miserly pittance Dr.v paid to his consultants (using their junior status to rob them blind)- this was the way to getting back at him. And as all the other consultants, including him, over the years, had indulged this fetishism of Mrs.V -without it getting known to Dr.V all these years why would I alone be afraid and run out of there? I cursed A and promised to get out to Tambaram this Sunday (to his clinic) and kick his ass in person for misleading me like this and getting me caught in such a bind. He was laughing hilariously as I cut the call......

The Next Superpower: The Dragon or the Elephant.....
Disclaimer: I am not a closet-communist nor a am I Chinese admirer- just to make things clear before hyper-jingoistic media and assorted intelligence agencies who might pick up an interest in me. One piece of advice-don’t waste your time.
The reason I am writing this post is because of the frequent laudatory headlines in the super-power obsessed media which state emphatically from all possible forums that India is a emerging super-power and just one step away from achieving it and China has a real competitor to it...
We have just had another series of Bomb blasts all over Mumbai and frankly i dont remember the last time I read in a newspaper or on the net or heard on the TV- that there was any kind of terror attacks in china- with the state - owned media, it might be true that the Chicoms might have micro-managed stuff, editing out unsavoury details, but i would find it incredibly surprising if they can cover up any terror attacks that easily in this connected world.
Unlike India - where we have started to accept as de-rigeur that our lives are never safe and if we step out of our homes, there is a very real possibility that we might not return.
Ok, Leave aside security. Lets talk about the Economy, stupid...(borrowing from the more famous Clinton.) There's a lot of stuff floating around the 'net about how China's growth is all a bubble about to burst any day. But frankly, they have survived the Global financial meltdown far better than critics give them credit for and they have built impressive infrastructure all over the country to show for it. The dragon woke up a long time ago and has been running ever since.
On the other hand, Indian economists have been boasting about having 8-percent growth over the last few years...up from the slow and steady Hindu rate of growth of 4%- we maintained over the past several decades. But stop and ask the man on the street and i am sure that he will say that comparitively he is worse off than before- ever since the robber-baron era began (in the late 90's) under the cover of liberalization of the economy. This is not true laissez-faire capitalism...this is CRONY Capitalism- like any that followed in any Banana Republic of central America.
The entire Indian growth story is based on either outsourcing contracts or shady financial transactions (for re-routing black money)- there is no credible manufacturing story here- to sustain the economy in the face of sudden capital flight.....Tirupur which used to be the tailoring capital of the world is now a ghost-town. If there comes a time, when the global financial markets demand : Show me the Money- I believe we would just show them a empty wallet. And the property market is so overheated all over India- its just a matter of time before a meltdown occurs.
And what about all those grandiose scientific successes we keep hearing about? The Chi-coms have just run a bullet rain at 300kmph speed. In India there's not a week which goes by without a train accident happening . And a minister who sulks at being appointed to the Railway (a minor) portfolio and refuses to visit accident sites? and we are planning to land a man on the moon? Dont make me laugh...let us first guarantee that every rail passenger survives his journey.
Finally Governance.....We boast about our much vaunted democracy and rule of the people- and daily we see how democracy fails us, due to men of straw occupying all the higher posts. we have a Prime Minister who is so desperate to survive in power - he sanctioned wholesale looting by his ministers. We have a heir-apparent Princeling who gads about the country speaking how much he hates nepotism and dynastism and not-at-all tongue-in-cheek..the poor sod actually believes he got where he is by merit?
and the less said about the principal opposition party the better. There is an incumbent PM-in-Waiting- who has been waiting so long to get it- that even if Yama were to appear before him- he would refuse to go without having sat on that chair at least for one day. And there entire policy is a mix of medieval obscurantism and mindless hatred of others- a sure recipe for disaster in this modern world.
I am not saying that China does not have corruption...but dont they publicly hang the corrupt over there? And when will we start doing it? that ought to put a little dent in the wholesale looting of the country
Finally, i would just like to add that even Pakistan, a nation that is 1/10th the size of India holds us in contempt and does pretty much what it pleases - while we go about the globe trying to drum up support for a seat on the Security council. Can any country try it with China? They do deserve that seat there, while India, until it puts its own house in order, does not.
And the biggest joke is we have named China as enemy-no.1...pleaase...they would beat us with their hands tied back...forget their superior conventional forces, all those upgraded military bases in Tibet and the long range missiles they have pointed at us...Can the Indian Prime Minster ever order a nuclear strike against a Chinese city (even as a counter strike- to follow up on a Chinese first strike?) I am sure that the Chinese would strike with impunity, given Indias' stupid no-first-use-policy (the weak posturing of a frightened kid) and then wait for the world, the US and Japan to tie up India's hands with diplomatic overture's. And we can be sure that our PM would demonstrate India's moral superiority by forgoing the nuclear option- even if millions of Indians die in a nuclear holocaust.
Should'nt there be a rule that every PM-in waiting be asked before swearing-in if he is comfortable with ordering a nuclear strike in the event of all-out -war?
These are just a sample of issues which go through my mind when I read stuff comparing about how the Elephant is catching up with the Dragon....Hell, you got a a long way to go you lumbering mammal......
