Eat Shit And Lose Weight ?

Eat Shit, Lose Weight.

Believe me, I am not shitting you

The internet serves a wholesome purpose in sharing a lot of vital and hard to get information to us in real time. Careful use of the net helps us to gain a lot of knowledge. But there are some real bloopers floating around the net in the name of science and it is actually hard to identify what’s real and what’s just plain old bull shit.

Talking of shit, reminds me of a rat shit thing I read just yesterday- a breaking news scientific paper on Science magazine which was being amped all over the internet- about how good bacteria from a thin persons stomach would cure obesity if given to a fat person. Intrigued, I went beyond the title and read the full article (as befitting my training as a BS deductor) only to see that it was a rat study and not a human study like the headlines subtly implied. The researchers had taken the fecal droppings (in plain words- rat shit) of a thin rat and fed it to a fat rat, an obese rat as they call it in the paper. This wholesome diet seems to have disagreed with the fat rat for on eating it he seems to have dropped a whole lot of weight which result the researchers immediately attributed to the beneficial effects of the shit, errr the bacteria in the shit from the thin rats stomach which must have shown the fat rats stomach bacteria how to digest the, errrr fat.

Anyway that’s what the researchers say inside the main body of the article unlike in the headlines where they scream in a bold font "New cure found for obesity". But personally I feel that though the result of the study is borderline believable, the reason for the weight loss might be something else entirely when you think about it. The fat rat that was being fed the fecal droppings of the thin rat must have developed an aversion to food and starved like our size zero models who just sniff at food when hungry. If you are a foodie of any sort, you can’t help but sympathize with that fat rat cant you?  I mean, made to eat something like that daily, is it any wonder he lost weight? And now as a follow up to the study, the researchers are planning to do human trials too.  Oh yeah, Eat shit (someone else's) and lose weight must be a very popular slogan to recruit people for the study. I can’t imagine a whole lot of people lining up to take that cure. Not even our desperate size zero models. They would rather starve wouldn’t they?

Its a whole lot of crap, ain't it?

Anyway the point of this post is to stress the point that medical news on the Internet is often highly hyped but factually incorrect. But a lot of people who see those screaming headlines go onto believe that the damn thing actually works. Very few take the time to read through the whole article to find out what it really says. Even if they do, they can’t understand the scientific jargon and the statistical magic tricks to make sense of the truth beyond the headlines. Besides most medical journals are pay-per-view only and never allow you to read the full thing- they just show you the sensational headlines and leave you to make your own interpretations. Often there is a very vast difference between what the title of an article says and what the real conclusion hidden inside the article says. And  even doctors find it difficult to interpret the real truth from the raw data included in the tables section like an afterthought- which is the only way to check whether a thing really works or the authors are just Bull S'ing you.

So even if the shit for food theory actually works, I don’t see much of a future for any shit-cure pills. What about you dear reader? Care to share your views? That is if you are still reading this post after all those shitty idioms I used above.

Live Simply......and Damn all appearances

I was at a Alumni part recently and my fellow students of long ago wowed me with their effortless displays of ostentation's by waving around their latest Blackberry's and i-phones and talking about how cool it was to drive their new Honda SUV's or Toyota Corolla/Camry's .....I was literally holding back my tummy with suppressed laughter when I remembered a recent post I had read off the internet that said that men who feel inadequate in the "size/performance" that matters overcompensate with the size of their other worldly assets...

Be that as it may, most of them were surprised that I had only a entry level mobile with me and my trusty old (8-year old) Santro car....I pared off questions about my financial dealings and my earnings despite all the pointed questions asked of me- because I felt then and still feel that it was not the right occasion to discuss my financial solvency and I was merely there to meet and greet old friends and have a good time with them. Well we spent the rest of the evening in high spirits and had much fun.

The point of this blog post is not to discuss whether my friends pride in their newest toys was justified. It was their money- they had worked hard, earned it and it was theirs to spend whichever way they wanted to. Fine. But were they also justified in expecting to apply their same standards to everyone?

My friends since their days at college had set up their own practices, and then branch offices, and rushed from one clinic to another every few hours all day. Some of them had their own labs/x-ray shops and even pharmacies. They were making money hand over fist from daybreak to midnight.....while I on the other hand have restricted my practice but explored more options in my life- I have had a good life (touch wood) explored all my other interests like a career in media, my passions like dance and basically have no issues with life. So what if I don't have the latest model mobile phone- my life is richer and more satisfying and I probably wont have an heart attack at 40.....(or wonder whether the kid who looks so different is really mine and when did that happen?)

And I have a mobile phone that makes calls, sends messages, even access the internet when i want to very urgently.....and I have a car which takes me from point to point when i want to....and I have so much peace in life....so who is the person with the better life? I leave it to you to judge....

Its not that I am lazy, or don't know the value of money.... I do- and its what I am precisely talking about here. The best thing my dad did after I finished college was to put me on my own two feet and ask me to take care of myself. he declined to be my angel investor or to put up the seed money........I had to find my own capital- it involved the customary- sweat, blood and tears and so unlike my other friends - I have really enjoyed the money I have made with the sweat of my brow.....and hence my hesitation on spending- when it comes to things I find non-essential....because, I have known people who- the moment that they earn more money, they think that it is only natural that they spend more, putting them back to square one. And that goes double for people, who's dads are already with well established practices...the so called 2nd generation- somehow, when you do not have to build everything from scratch, you do not really value money.

And finally when some of the guys ask me, 'What is the point in making so much money if you don't enjoy it?' The thing is that I don't really find happiness in buying latest gadgets, jewellery or in showing off to others. Even if buying something makes me happy it is only for a while, it does not last. Only if something attracts me by its very beauty or esthetic appeal- i go against my better sense and buy it. Thats love at first sight and can be excused, you know..

And I would go out on a limb and say that if you need material things to make you happy, then you live a pretty sad and unfulfilled life....well thats me....so what do you think?

A Spammer in the Works

I am pleasantly surprised by the amount of mail I recieve in my various e-mail ID's. Previously , when we just had snail mail - my correspondence used to be pretty erratic and infrequent. But now I get to meet a lot of new friends and well-wishers who mail me so often- almost daily, that, I fear I am on their mind most of the day (and night).

There is this nice lady, from Holland (whose I.P. address I traced back) , who is a very frequent correspondent of mine and who is very particularly worried about my sex life. Almost everyday, she reminds me to "Enlarge my Reproductive Organ" and she is constantly worried about the length, or rather the lack of it. I am quite astounded at her solicitude and her anxiety to improve my till now non-existing sexual life and her ingenious ideas to better myself to offer "Full Satisfaction" (her words). Her constant worry about the size of my organ, even when I'm not myself worried about its current state, made me write a nice mail back to her, where, I enquired about her health and well-being, and then I expressed astonishment that "my size" was such a hot topic of interest in Holland and then , I enquired of her, (quite gently) the source of that false and malicious rumour suggesting that I was "ill-equipped" ( I included exact measurements in both metric and imperial measurements - cm's and inches) and I vouchsafed statistics to prove that far from being lacking I was right in the middle of the average Indian measurement curve, in other words, it wasn't time to start worrying yet....... She didn't reply to me for a couple of weeks after that mail. then one day she resumed the old correspondence with new offers of Viagra-Substitutes to help "ease my mind" . I absolutely fail to see the connection between peace of mind and intake of Sildenafil Citrate and I have written back to her asking for further details and more information on my peace of mind thing....

Then there is a nice gentleman from America who offers to get me loans from banks in the United States without any collateral. I was simply touched at his generosity - I mean our local Corporation bank branch where I have a small savings account (transferred from my Piggy-bank) refused to grant me a vehicle loan after much procrastination- they delayed the sanction so much and made me keep going back for umpteen visits, that I entirely dropped the idea of buying a vehicle and am quite satisfied with the public transport buses (PTC, hats off) and here was this gentleman offering to stand surety for me from America!!!! I wrote him back a nice letter with my appreciation of his offer and then I politely refused , by informing him that my conscience wouldn't stand it, if he were to sacrifice himself to help me enjoy luxuries which I don't miss at the moment and if I were ever to change my mind, he would be the first person , I would let know. He hasn't acknowledged my letter yet, busy man he must be, such a philanthropist...

This is the power of the Internet - when they say that it empowers people all-over this is what they must mean.. You not only get to meet a lot of new friends sitting at home - you also gain so much new knowlegde of things happening all around you. It just requires you to be courteous enough to reply immediately..... Welcome to Web 2.0 - where the world worries about you and offers you unsolicited help..
